There's something about the start of a new year that makes us feel hopeful. We count down to midnight, ring in the new year, and all of a sudden feel like we can accomplish whatever we want. And you know what? We're right. Unfortunately, as the excitement of a new year starts to fade, our determination tends to fade with it.
We've barely made it through January, so don't quit just yet! I'm going to reach my goals this year and I want you to reach yours too.
It's vital that you know exactly what you want to accomplish. Get specific, get a plan, and get real.
Get Specific: Pin point exactly what you want to do. Saying, "I want to lose weight" isn't good enough. How many pounds? Do you have a deadline? You need specific details to stay on track.
Get a Plan: Write out steps that will help you accomplish your goal. You're planning on starting a business? That's great! How are you going to do it? Write down small steps that will get you to the bigger picture.
Get Real: You can accomplish anything, but you can only do so much at once. Make sure your goal is realistic. You probably can't save $5,000 a month, but maybe you can save $500. Get real with where you are and what you have so you're setting yourself up for something you can actually do.
Now that we've covered the basics, here's what you can do to keep your New Year's Resolution all year!
1. Get An Accountability Partner
Ask someone close to you to hold you accountable for your goal. If you're giving up burgers, you're giving up burgers. You need someone to check you when you try to find wiggle room. Give this task to a friend, family member, or anyone you can count on to keep it real. When you get off track, they need to to tell you, even if it hurts.
2. Stay Inspired
Surround yourself with quotes and photos related to your goals. Make them your screensaver, create a vision board, hang them in your room, etc. The more you see physical versions of your goals, the more you'll internalize them. The more you internalize them, the more likely you are to act on them.
Join a group with people who have similar goals. Groups have huge benefits. You'll learn from your group, get a push when you need it, and form new relationships in the process. You can join a group physically or start a group online.
4. Get Educated
A great way to succeed is to study the experts. Stock up on books related to your goals or listen to relevant podcasts. Take advantage of free sources such as Soundcloud and local libraries. There you'll find a wide range of content and learn from those who have already accomplished what you're trying to do.
Treat yo self! Every month? Every week? The duration is up to you, but it's important to reward yourself for staying on the right path.
